Finding security and independence through progressive home ownership
Shared spaces like the basketball court give children a chance to connect with neighbours, build friendships and feel part of the community.
For years, home was about compromise. Renting gave me stability, but it never really felt like mine. Decisions about the space and the future were out of my hands, and I longed for somewhere I could feel truly settled.
I thought owning a home was possible at first, but the timing never felt right. Renting seemed easier, even though I wanted something permanent.
After my relationship ended, I faced the challenge of starting again as a single parent. Rising house prices and previous mortgage rejections made ownership feel daunting — until a friend suggested looking into Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust’s (ŌCHT) Secure Home Progressive Home Ownership programme.
I didn’t even know it was called progressive home ownership, but when I visited the property, I realised it could actually work for us.
With support from a housing advisor, family and friends, the process was smoother than expected. I’d applied for mortgages before, so I knew the steps, and the support team was great.
Today, my children and I are thriving in our new home. I can make choices about my space, my furniture, my art. It’s warmer, cleaner and safer. Most of all, we have privacy and a sense of calm that we didn’t have before.
We’ve had more visitors in the past few months than in our old rental. We celebrated a milestone birthday here and it felt comfortable for everyone. My kids are happier and more relaxed — they’re even joining in with neighbours for games on the shared court.
I’m proud I did this on my own. I had no financial help, just my savings and retirement fund. I feel positive about the future because I’m finally living my own life.
My advice to others? If buying on the open market isn’t an option, consider this programme. Be aware of the ongoing costs, but don’t let that put you off. This is about security, community and shaping a future for yourself and your family.
